The local argument for composite
The usual pitch for composite is that it does not rot. In a humid climate that is compelling. Here it is nearly beside the point — Idaho's dry air means decay pressure on a wood deck is genuinely low, and a well-detailed pressure-treated deck will not rot out the way one in Georgia might.
What actually degrades decks in this region is sun. High-desert UV at elevation, combined with the wide daily temperature swings this area sees, breaks down wood surface fibres and the finishes applied to them faster than most homeowners anticipate. Boards check, cup and turn silver. South and west exposures fail first and fail hardest.
The consequence is a maintenance treadmill: sanding and refinishing every few years, indefinitely, on a deck that is structurally fine. Composite ends that treadmill. That is the real local argument — not rot resistance, but escaping a finish schedule that this climate makes unusually demanding.
What it costs you
Composite is meaningfully more expensive up front than pressure-treated. Whether it pays back depends on how long you stay and how diligent you would otherwise have been about maintenance. Someone who genuinely refinishes on schedule comes out ahead more slowly than someone who would have let it go and replaced boards early.
There is one Pocatello-specific caveat that national guides skip: surface heat. Composite absorbs and holds more heat than light-coloured wood. On a south-facing deck through a Pocatello July, dark composite gets hot enough to be uncomfortable barefoot. If your deck faces south or west and you have children or dogs, choose lighter colours and ask to stand on a sample in full sun before committing.
Framing implications
This is where composite projects go wrong, and it is worth understanding before you get quotes.
Composite is less stiff than wood and generally requires tighter joist spacing — where wood might span comfortably at 16 inches on centre, many composite products want 12, and tighter still for diagonal layouts or stair treads. Manufacturer requirements vary by product line, and following them is a warranty condition.
Two practical consequences. First, if you are re-decking an existing frame, check its joist spacing against your chosen product before you buy anything. A 16-inch frame may need sistered joists or blocking added, which changes the economics of the project. Second, on a new build, the frame has to be designed for the decking from the start — a crew that frames for wood and then switches material has created a problem.
Add Pocatello's snow loading on top. A deck holding accumulated snow through an extended cold spell is carrying real weight, and the combination of composite's spacing requirements and local snow load is why some builders here frame decks more heavily than a generic span table suggests.
Expansion and gapping
Composite expands and contracts with temperature more than wood does, and Pocatello's daily swings are wide. Manufacturer gapping specifications at ends and edges exist for this reason and are not optional — boards installed tight in cold weather will buckle in July. Ask your builder how they handle gapping and whether they install to manufacturer spec.
Choosing a product

Both make multiple tiers, and the difference between an entry-level line and a capped premium line is substantial — capped products have a protective outer shell that resists fading and staining considerably better, which matters more here than in a shadier climate.
What to ask about any product you are quoted:
- Is it capped? Uncapped composite fades and stains far more readily under this much sun.
- What is the fade and stain warranty specifically — not the structural warranty, which is usually longer and less relevant.
- Required joist spacing for this product, in this layout.
- Colour and heat. Stand on a sample in afternoon sun.
- Is the railing the same product? Composite railing costs substantially more than wood, and mixing a composite deck surface with pressure-treated railing and a composite top rail is a common cost-saving compromise.
Composite is not maintenance-free, whatever the brochure says. It needs cleaning, it can stain, and cheaper uncapped products will fade under Pocatello sun. What it genuinely eliminates is sanding and refinishing. If you want a deck you never think about, composite gets you closer than wood does. If budget is the binding constraint, a properly built and properly finished pressure-treated deck is not a bad deck — it is just a deck you have to keep up with.
Common questions
Can I put composite on my existing frame?
Often yes, and it is excellent value when the frame is sound. Check three things first: joist spacing against the product requirement, the condition of the joist tops while they are exposed, and whether the added weight is within what the frame was designed for. A builder should assess all three before quoting.
Does composite get slippery in winter?
Wet or icy composite can be slick, as can wet wood. Textured and embossed surfaces help. For snow removal, use a plastic shovel rather than metal, and check the manufacturer's guidance on ice melt — some chloride-based products are not recommended and can void a warranty. Relevant here, since your deck will be under snow for months.
How long does composite actually last?
Warranties commonly run 25 to 50 years on structure, with shorter separate terms on fade and stain. Read the fade warranty specifically — in a high-UV market that is the one you are more likely to need, and it is usually the shorter of the two.
Is composite worth it if I plan to sell soon?
Probably not on pure economics. You pay the premium up front and do not stay long enough to collect the maintenance savings, and buyers in this market are unlikely to pay a matching premium. If you are staying ten-plus years, the calculation flips.
